Join us on Saturday, September 28, from 1–3 p.m., as we celebrate the spirit of fall and honor our community leaders, including firefighters, police officers, medical professionals, and civic leaders. "Harvest Heroes" will inspire young minds and foster a sense of appreciation for those who dedicate their lives to serving others. Participants are encouraged to dress up like their favorite community helpers. The first 100 children to register will receive a free copy of one of the books we'll read that day. 

Barbara's Saturday Storytime honors the legacy of former First Lady Barbara Bush’s passion for literacy. Each Barbara’s Saturday Storytime event will feature a new theme and a special guest reader, aiming to create an engaging and interactive experience for children and families alike.

This program is designed to encourage family educational time so we welcome all members of the family to join us in this enriching experience.

Sam Mihara: A Detailed Look at Japanese-American Internment Camps

Join us for two intimate discussions with Japanese Internment Camp survivor Sam Mihara as he shares a detailed look at life in an Japanese-American internment camps and talks about the importance of civic duties. This event will take place on Friday, May 3, at the theater located in the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum. Our first program complies with all Texas educational standards and is high encouraged from 4th grade up. The evening program is open to the public as Sam shares stories and artifacts from his time in an American Concentration Camp.

George to George: Shaping the Nation by Our Constitution on Facebook Live

Join historian and former attorney, Thomas Borcher, for a Facebook Live presentation on September 14, 16 and 18 that looks at our United States Constitution from the perspectives of the first and forty-first presidents - from George Washington to George H. W. Bush. Learn of the important compromises the founding fathers made in order to create a “more perfect union,” and that resulted in a document that is the oldest operating written constitution in the world today.

We’ll take a look at how the Constitution structured the three branches of government. And we’ll see how President George H. W. Bush handled his Executive Branch duties in keeping with the “rules” established when George Washington first held that office.

Viewers at home or in classrooms will have opportunities to post questions during his presentation on Facebook and have them answered by Tom. You can also send questions for Tom Borcher to shirley.hammond@nara.gov by September 7.

Please join us as constitutional law expert Thomas Borcher emphasizes and discusses the specific role of the three branches of the U.S. Government: Executive, Judicial and the Legislative. We will discuss how the Constitution has guidelines and establishes precedents for the president to follow. Examples of these roles will be given in this program. 
 
Mr. Borcher will cover how George Washington, using the Constitution as his guide, established the Executive Branch during the first presidency. This creation of the Executive Branch set the bar that President George H.W. Bush met throughout his presidency. 
 
Mr. Borcher will discuss George H.W. Bush’s decisions as Commander in Chief of the Military in the Gulf War as well as his integral role in the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Working side by side with Congress, President George H.W. Bush exemplified the cooperative relationship between the different branches of government, just as President Washington intended. 
 
Teachers are encouraged to download the event flier and complete the Pre-Program Activities with the students in advance of the program to further enrich the experience. Reflections of President and Mrs. Bush's lives of service offer tangible understanding of local/national leaders whose legacies continue. Oba will present authentic and inspirational stories as well as interactive music and songs drawing upon African traditions.  The Freedom Walk to the Bush Library and Museum begins at the Lincoln Recreation Center at 9:00 a.m. The storytelling program will take place from 10:30-11:30 a.m at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center. Join us for a fascinating presentation by world-renowned World War II expert Dr. Arnold Krammer. Dr. Krammer delivers fantastic insight about Nazi POW camps in America - even the one that was located in nearby Hearne, Texas. Listen as he describes how the United States government detained nearly half-a-million Nazi Prisoners of War from 1942 through 1945. Krammer explains how, with no precedence upon which to form policy, America's handling of these foreign prisoners led to the hasty conversion of CCC camps, high school gyms, local fairgrounds, and race tracks to serve as holding areas.
