Presidential Leadership Scholars Visit at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Center

Presidential Leadership Scholars Visit at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Center

From May 14–16, 2026, the George & Barbara Bush Foundation welcomed the Presidential Leadership Scholars to College Station for a leadership module focused on strategic partnerships, character and public service. Held across the George H.W. Bush Presidential Center and The Association of Former Students, the visit gave scholars the opportunity to study leadership through the example and enduring legacy of President George H.W. Bush.

The module opened with remarks from Foundation President and CEO Alice Gonzalez Yates, followed by a moderated conversation with Secretary Andy Card. Drawing from his years of public service and experience working alongside President Bush, Secretary Card shared insights on trust, decision-making and the importance of building strong relationships across institutions and differing perspectives.

Throughout the visit, scholars participated in classroom sessions on developing and sustaining strategic partnerships, along with reflection sessions and a leadership workshop. The program also included a moderated conversation with Dr. John Sherman, dean of the Bush School of Government and Public Service, and an evening discussion with Jean Becker, author of “Character Matters” and former chief of staff to President Bush.

Beyond the classroom, scholars toured the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, visited the James A. Baker III Pavilion and participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Bush gravesite. They also connected with program alumni and experienced Texas A&M traditions during a reception and dinner at The Association of Former Students.

The module offered scholars a meaningful opportunity to consider how principled leadership, personal character and trusted partnerships can strengthen organizations, communities and the nation. Through thoughtful conversations and lessons from President Bush’s legacy, participants were challenged to lead with humility, courage and a commitment to serving others.
