What is comprehensive family literacy?
The Barbara Bush Fund for Family Literacy 2027 grant cycle supports four-component family literacy programming. The four components––adult education and literacy, child education and literacy, parent education, and interactive parent-child literacy activities––are interconnected and must all be present for a comprehensive family literacy program.
This model:
- Promotes parents, children, and extended family members learning together and using literacy in their home and as part of their daily life.
- Supports reciprocal learning—meaning the child is learning from the parent and the parent is learning from the child.
- Equips the parent with skills to support a child’s learning while also developing their own literacy skills.
Important Note: A parent is an adult who plays an important role in the child’s life, and we use the word parent to indicate parent or caregiver.
